LA NATATION A L'HONNEUR
AU MERITE SPORTIF

Comme a chaque annee, la

Julie Daigneault, la grande etoile de
la Coupe Esso qui a remporte 4
medaills d'or; dans la categorie
entraineur. Ken McKinnon,
egalement recipiandaire du titre de
meilleur entraineur senior au
Quebec; dans la categorie
administrateur, Leo-Paul Bonin,
president de la Federation et
reelu Vice-Chairman de I'ACNA au
dernier congres de I'ACNA les 3-4
octobre; dans la categorie officiel,
qui d'autre pouvait mieux representer
le Quebec que celui qui a ete
couronne officiel national de
I'annee, Andre Ladouceur?

Lors d'une conference de presse,
on annoncait que Ken McKinnon,
Leo-Paul Bonin et Andre Ladouceur
etaient finalsites dans leur categorie
respective. Ce n'est que le 21
novembre que nous connaTtrons le
grand vainqueur de ce concours.

Quant a l'athlete par excellence,
nous connaitrons les resultats des

LOTO-NATATION VOIT LE JOUR

La Federation de Natation
suggere aux clubs ou associations
un programme d'autof inancement
qui n'exigeaucun investissement
financier initial: une loterie.
L'enjeu de cette loterie se compose
de 4 prix: 2 voyages, une chalne
stereophonique et un ensemle
Speedo. Si tous les clubs
participaient, non seulement
ceux-ci y gagneraient puisqu'ils
conservent 75% du prof it, mais la
Federation pourrait investir dans
des programmes qui prof iteront
a tous.

LES FICHES DE DETECTION DE
TALENT SONT MAINTENANT
DISPONIBLES

Parent, si vous desirez connaTtre
la condition physique de votre
enfant et les limites de son endurance,
son potentiel et sa capacite aerobique,
ses mesures anthropometriques et

sa force musculaire, demandez a son
entraineur de lui faire passer le test
de detection de talent. En effet,
comme par les annees passees, la
Federation recommande fortement
ce test et met des maitenant de
nouvelles f iches de detection de
talent a I'usage des clubs. II est a
souligner que le test ne peut etre
effectue que si la fiche est
correctement remplie. On peut en
faire la demande a Andre Fournier
ou Edgar Theoret (514) 374-4700
postes 256-257.

ON AURAIT BESOIN DE
BENEVOLES POUR LE
SYSTEME INFORMATIQUE . . .

Certains se souviendront
qu'autrefois, les formules
d'affiliation etainet manipulees
par des benevoles qui sacrifiaient
quelques heures pour accelerer le
processus d'affiliation. Nois
aimerions continuer cette tradition
en invitant les benevoles a venir
nous donner un coup de main pour
I'affiliation des nageurs sur le
systeme informatique.

Un autre groupe de benevoles
pourra aussi etre affecte a la
compilation du dossier des officiels.
Ceux et celles qui sont interesses
peuvent contacter Pierre Viau a
la Federation.

European Championships

The 15th European Champion-
ships, in Split, Yugoslavia, Sep.5-12
gave continental swimmers a great
forum in which to show-off their
prowess.

Canadian men's coach, Dave
Johnson, who attended the meet
with brother Tom, reports that the
most impressive aspect of the meet
was the closeness of the relays.
Johnson feels that European
swimmers will be at a decided
advantage next year at the Worlds
as they now have had two
consecutive years of major
competition. Unlike Canada which
hasn't competed at such a meet
since 1978.

The German Democratic
Republic won the swimming
portion of the meet, with 15 golds
to the Soviet Union's 13. The DDR
dominated the women's events,
with a clean sweep of all golds, and
going 1-2 in 10 of these events.
Soviet men were verv strong in the

male side, with wins in the 200-1500
free, 100-200 breast, 200-400 im,
and all three relays.

British swimmers looked strong
with two Commonwealth records
being set; Phil Hubble in the 200

fly and Susan Brownsdon in the
100 breast. Jackie Willmott was
another medal winner (bronze in
400-800 free). Adrian Moorehouse,
will be a breaststroker to watch
(1:04.13-2:18.14).

For the first time, a major
international meet had consolation
finals, and these were run after
the main event, an idea which has
been suggested for the 1982 World
Championships Trials here in
Canada.

NOSE
CLIPS

SUPERIOR OESIGN: With proper alignment, [he contoured nose pads

seal the air cavity at the sides of your nose rather than squeeze the front,
allowing you a more comfortable fit. The nose clip is adjusted by pulling
nose pads apart. The Sand-beige colour blends with every skin coloui . There's no metal to rust or break

No other heart rate
monitor has the accuracy,
speed and simplicity of
Insta-Pulse at such an
affordable price.

Measuring heart rate gives you
immediate feedback on the
effects of fitness training. If you
are measuring heart rate the old
way, your calculations are
probably off by 20% or more.
That's why the Insta-Pulse heart
rate monitor was developed.

Insta-Pulse works on the same
principle as an electrocardiograph
(EKG) and utilizes a micro-
computer chip. It monitors each
heart muscle contraction and
instantly translates it into heart
beats per minute. Yet it weighs a
mere ten ounces, measures 1 1" x
VA" and is a fraction of the cost.

•Winner of the Silver Medal Award at the International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva Switzerland.

Insta-Pulse is 100% solid state
and runs on a single 9 volt battery
for up to one year (over 100,000
readings). The battery is included.
Circuitry is shielded from damage
by a thick, clear lucite shell.

Insta-Pulse comes with a 90 day
warranty and a 30 day money
back guarantee. For further
information, please write or call.

NEW CLUB IN MANITOBA

Jim Fowlie, recently appointed
head coach of the newly formed
Manta Aquatic Club has sent us
the following:

It is with great pride and pleasure
I am greeting you from Winnipeg and
the newly formed Manta Aquatic
Club.

As you may not be familiar with
the Manta Aquatic Club's program
or myself, I would like to take this
opportunity to introduce us.

My name is quite familiar in
Canadian swimming and most
prominent in British Columbia. In
1974 I established the Canadian
record  in  the  400  individual  medley;
through the years '75 and '76 I had
the honour of representing the
Canadian National team, competing
under coach Deryk Snelling at the
Canadian Dolphin Swim Club. It
was in these years that I established
one Commonwealth record and set
the world's fastest time for short
course metres in the 400 i.m.. I was
fortunate to have my Canadian
record in the 400 i.m. survive three
years after my retirement.

Despite my retirement as an
athlete, my hear always remained in
swimming. My full professional
career began in Prince George, B.C.
followed with North Vancouver and
later Calgary, Alberta. In all these
programs I have enjoyed working with
very talented and dedicated athletes,
and honoured to have had an
Olympic team members on Canada's

AUSTRALIANS IN VANCOUVER

A team representing the
Australian Sport Institute met the
Canadian team, just assembling for
departure to Tokyo, on August 23.
It was a big occasion for the Aussie's
as they 'shaved-down' and managed
to beat the Canadian team 130 to
112.

Noteworthy were the world
class  performances  posted  by  the
swimmers from down under. Paul
Rowe, 200 fly 2:01.60, he's now
an Australian citizen, but formerly
swam for New Zealand; Lisa Curry,
100 fly 1 :01.96; Michelle Pearson,
200 im, 2:18.97 and 400 im 4:57.55.

TOKYO INTERNATIONAL

The meet was hosted by the
Japanese Swimming Federation, with
travel and accommodation expenses
paid for the visiting teams.

In addition to the host nation,
Australia, Canada, United States
and the People's Republic of China
sent strong contingents, with the
Soviet Union, sending 'B' swimmers,
as their best were competing at the
European Championships.

Several Canadians did their
season's best times:
Graham Welbourn, 1 00 free 51 .57
Jeff Sheehan, 200 im, 2:07.59
Cam Reid, 200 im 2:07.65
Anne Jardin, 200 free 2:04.27
Jen Campbell, 100 back 1 :05.39
Nancy Garapick, 400 im, 4:56.32

The Canadian team didn't obtain
any firsts, but managed 1 1 seconds
and 2 thirds.
1981-82 NATIONAL SWIMMING TEAM

31 swimmers have been named to the National Team. Selection was based on
either bettering a required time standard or world ranking.

1980 team.

September, 1981 an extremely
challenging coaching offer brought
my family and myself to Winnipeg,
Manitoba.

The Winnipeg Manta Aquatic
Club is extremely dedicated to the
development of elite senior athletes
and age group swimming. The
dedication is obviously displayed in
the newly structured Community
program. The previous teams, the
Cardinal Swim Club, and the Dolphin
Swim Club amalgamated to form
"Manta" on September 1, 1981.
The purpose of this fusion of Swim
Clubs was to provide the best
possible professional coaching and
swimming program with stability,
security and continuity.

Manta hopes that our swimming
program will provide challenging
competition and be in your

considerations as either host or
visitor. We are very proud to be part
of the 1984 Olympic movement, and
I only hope that we may help you
take a larger role in swimming.

NEW PROGRAM IN TORONTO

Trevor Tiffany has remained in
Toronto and formed a new club
at the University of Toronto,
together with varsity coaches
Byron MacDonald (men) and
Merrily Stratten (women). The
home of the organization is the
U.of T. Athletic Centre, site of
many fine national class meets
and the headquarters of the
National Fitness Assesment Program.

Varsity swimmers will represent
UTSC during the winter season,
but will be free to join their home
clubs in time for the winter nationals.

The team as set-up currently is
mainly a senior group, but an age
group component is planned for
once additional pool time is
arranged.

Several national team members
will represent the club, most notably:
Dan Thompson, Claus Bredschneider
and Dave Town.

The club and the varsity teams
use the same pool hours and workouts
are structured in such a way that
all three squads gain from the new
venture.

Esso Swim Canada Update

The awards in the form of crests,
decals and certificates have been
developed and are available to
facilities that have piloted the
program. Current efforts focus on
establishing the necessary
[ leadership packages to train
instructors. Guidelines have been
established for master course
conductors, course conductors and
instructors.

Plans call for the training of
master course conductors from all
sections to begin in late November.
I This will permit those sections
that are ready to begin the training
I of course conductors and
| instructors this month (December).

The Esso Swim Canada poster is
[ currently available to all sections.
| Other promotional material such as
posters and brochures will be
| available within the next few weeks.
For further information, please
contact Ray Allard, CASA Director
of Participation Services.

Coaching help needed in the
Bahamas

Elizabeth van Zanden, Secretary
of the Barracuda Swim Club in
Nassau, Bahamas, wrote to the
national office recently, an excerpt
from which is printed here:

"We are a young small club
located in a 25-metre outdoor pool
at a school. None of our coaches
are trained, but we do our best for
the children, who range in age
from five to 16. Could you help us
locate an experienced coach who
would like to take a busman's
holiday (all expenses paid) here for
threeor four weeks? All his travel
expenses would be paid and he would
be put up at a home. In return, we
would ask him to help with our
coaches and the organization of the
club.

"We would prefer a man. I am
sure there are many qualified women
who can do the job, but she would
run into definite problems with
prejudice. We would like to get
going on this as soon as possible,
especially since it is usually too
cold to do much swimming between
the middle of December and the end
of February."

Any takers? Write air mail to
Elizabeth at the Barracuda Swim
Club, P.O. Box N3005, Nassau,
Bahamas, or call her collect at
(809) 323-2025.

Swim-A-Thon names still missing

There are still sections that
have yet to submit the names of
their Top 10 achievers, or the
sizes for their top achiever, for the

1981 Swim-A-Thon. Please
forward this information to Hilda
Brownlee as soon as possible, so
Hilda can place the orders with
Arena.

While still on the topic of
Swim-A-Thon, the kit material was
available in early November for any
section or club that wished to have
their material early. The price per
kit is $0.60. Kit material may also
be purchased separately. For more

1982 National Conference

The Canadian Amateur Swimming
Association and Canadian Swimming
Coaches Association invite you to
attend their second National

The conference will be held in
the excellent conference centre at
Mont Ste Marie.

Top European and North

of 1982.

The first conference, also held
at Mont Ste Marie was an outstanding

Les Bahamas en mal d'entraineurs

Le bureau national a recu une
lettre d'Elizabeth van Zanden,
secretaire du club de natation
Barracuda, a Nassau, aux Bahamas.
En voici un extrait:

"Notre jeune et petit club a a
sa disposition la piscine exterieure
de 25 m d'une ecole. Aucun de nos
entraineurs n'a subi de formation,
mais nous faisons notre possible
pour les enfants, dont les ages
s'echelonnent entre cinq Rt seize
ans. Pourriez-vous nous a der a
trouver un entralneur experiments
et interesse a venir ici pour trois ou
quatre semaines de vacances
d'affaires toutes depenses payees?
Nous nous occuperons de tous ses
frais de sejour, et il serait heberge
dans une famille. En retour, il aidera
nos entraineurs et participera a
I'organisation du club.

Nous prefererions un homme. Je
suis certaine qu'un grand nombre de
femmes seraient tout aussi qualifiees,
mais elles se heurteraient surement
a des prejuges. Nous aimerions que
ce projet se realise le plus tot
possible, etant donne qu'il fait
habituellement trop froid pour nager
entre la mi-decembre et la fin
fevrier."
